James is a full-time artist based here at Cockington Court.

James’s portraits and Landscapes have been recognised by the Royal Society and a passion for plein air painting saw him reach the semi-finals of Landscape Artist of the Year 2019. He’s been selected as a main contestant for a second time, with the upcoming series set to air in 2024.

Working primarily with oils and other mediums, James’s subjects include coastal areas, woodlands, and local flora. Plein air painting is integral to his creative process, enhancing the authenticity of his studio works. His exploration of colour and composition draws inspiration from nature.

James completed an artist residency here at Cockington Court in 2020, before securing an on-site studio, a first for a painter. He’s helped curate solo and group exhibitions, including 3D works, for themed art and sculpture trails. Meeting HRH’s Charles and Camilla was a notable highlight, with James presenting an artwork to His Royal Highness.

Through his studio, James interacts with visitors, offering insights into his approach and conducting art classes. He enjoys mentoring aspiring artists in plein air techniques, aiding their progress and artistic development. Amidst the serene landscapes of Cockington Court, James’s work embodies a natural and evocative artistic journey.

My practice includes oil painting, printmaking and more recently, sculpture, taking inspiration from my natural surroundings.
